Project Graduation a huge successBy Janine Leffler
After the excitement of the Souhegan High School graduation ceremony the students headed over to Hampshire Hills Sports and Fitness Center in Milford for Project Graduation. This was the first year that Project Graduation was initiated for Souhegan seniors, and it was a huge success, with 118 students attending. Every student in attendance won at least one prize ranging from $10-100. In addition there were eight grand prizes. For co-coordinator Nance Panasiti the most rewarding part of the event was “Hard work, great helpers. Mrs. McNamara's prizes, Mr. Fichera and Party Vision entertainment, John Wilson DJ and the kids loved the hypnotist.” Panasiti went on to say that she wouldn’t want to change much about the event but she wished she had thought to video tape it.
I talked to many seniors to get their reaction about Project Graduation. Tori Loubier, 18 of Amherst said “My favorite part of Project Graduation was the hypnotist!! He was awesome. I literally was laughing so hard I started to cry. It was the funniest thing of my life! People really got into it.” A majority of other students that I interviewed agreed with Loubier. For Kaitlyn Zambroski, 17 of Amherst the least favorite part of the evening was “the restrictions on leaving. Most kids had to drive themselves home afterwards and I know a good handful of people that nearly fell asleep while driving, myself included. Had we spent either a few more hours there so we could rest, or been able to go earlier, it might have made it more safe.” To improve the event for next year’s seniors McKinley Curro suggested “Get everyone to go! It was so much fun- tons of activities, food, swimming- it's a great way to have a final night with the kids you've basically been together with your whole childhood- but may never see again.” Tori Loubier went on to say, “I liked how more than half of my grade went to it. it was cool being with everyone and knowing it was our last time together...having a sleepover. it really does promote a safe graduation night and i really recommend it to all of the seniors next year!”
A lot of thanks needs to be given to Nance Panasiti and Susan Feeney for coordinating this wonderful event. Hopefully with the success of Project Graduation it will become a yearly tradition.

Week 3 of my internship has flown by. I can't believe how fast time is flying and that July will be here pretty soon. Wow! This week has been so busy for me. On Monday I worked on my graduation article; identified some people in pictures from the graduation and wrote some picture captions; edited some articles and went with Susan to Souhegan to identify some people in pictures from graduation that we weren't sure of who they were. Tuesday was kind of a laid back day I basically edited some articles and looked over some pages for the Cabinet. Yesterday was insanely busy. I called Souhegan to confirm that the amount community service hours that the seniors earned as a whole class was correcrt and helped Susan look up information she needed for an article I was writing. Today I got a lot accomplished I worked on my questions for the Summertime 30 years ago article and still need to come up with a couple more; I worked on my questions for my follow up article about Project Graduation which I then later e-mailed to the person who coordinated it and e-mailed some questions to the students who attended to get their feedback. I also got some phone number of people I need to call for a follow up article I am going to co-write with Susan about the flooding on Conifer Lane that happened a few weeks ago.
Today my graduation article was on page 6 of the Cabinet I am very proud of myself and feel very accomplished that I got an article in the paper. I am sincerely hoping there will be many more where that came from.

It’s amazing how fast time flies, isn’t it? It seems like yesterday when I was walking across the stage to receive my diploma, and now here I am, two years later on the other side of stage watching this year’s seniors graduate. I experienced many of the same emotions that this year’s seniors are feeling when it comes to graduating; nervous to leave all things that are familiar behind, yet excited to start a new chapter in the book of life. Vanessa Patten, eighteen, of Mont Vernon, who will be attending The University of Vermont this fall to study animal sciences has the following advice for next year’s seniors: “Remember to always do what you love. Don’t stress too much about getting into the “top” universities or Ivy Leagues, but instead find a college that is truly a good fit for you. Every school has something to offer, no matter where it lies in the Princeton Review or whatever. Always follow your own dreams and no one else’s.” Shannon Stone, 18, also of Mont Vernon who will be attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in the fall says the thing that she’ll miss most about Souhegan is “ My teachers because they have always been great- so funny and smart. I will also miss my friends – they helped me with everything.”
Salutatorian Caroline Morley reflected on in her speech what makes us New Englanders unique as well as how important it is for her fellow graduates to remember their past “ Some of us have lived here forever, others only for a few years. But we all share that connection ,and a certain bond with other because of it As we go out into the real world , scattered around the country and the world, it is important to remember this small town past: From geese, to snow to 4th of July parades, we all have memories here.”
As an incoming college junior at New England College in Henniker I have the following advice for this year’s seniors: Don’t be afraid to try something new. Follow Souhegan’s mission statement and push your comfortable limits. Think outside the box a little and join a club you may not have joined in high school. Heck, I was never on the newspaper in high school and here I am writing this article for the Milford Cabinet as part of a summer internship. My love for theatre was what drove me to be the theatre correspondent for my college’s newspaper. Joining clubs is also a good way to meet new people who you might not normally talk to outside of class.
In the words of Judy Garland “ Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of somebody else.” Congratulations to the Souhegan High School class of 2006!

After a nice relaxing weekend it was back to work yesterday. Not that i am complaining!
Yesterday I made some phone calls to the town offices in Hollis Milford and Manchester about when their fourth of July events are being held. I also called the local high school to find out where and when they are having thier ceremonies for graduation. I also did some proofreading of some articles. When I got home I checked my e-mail to see if I had gotten any information for my article I am writing about graduation. I sent a list of questions to five of my friends who are graduating and have gotten back responses from two of them.
Today I went on assignment with Susan the reporter i am shadowing. We went to the SAU office to ask the school adminstrators about changes they've made to the way they do assesments for students in grade three to grade eight. I found it to be very interesting. The test is a whole lot different than the test I took when I was in 10th grade because they have made it more instructional and user friendly for the students who are taking it. For my part of the article we are going to write together I have to interview my sister, who is in 8th grade and a few of her friends about how they feel about the testing. My sister doesn't remember a lot about the testing because she had to take a lot of different tests this year. I also did some work on my graduation article.

Days 2 & 3
So Tuesday was interesting I went to court with the reporter who writes articles about the crime reports. There was supposed to be a probable cause hearing but the people who were supposed to come in for the hearing waived at the last minute. We then proceeded to go to the Milford Police Department to pick up what ever little snipits we could about information about vandelism and what not. When we got back to the office I edited some articles. Today I edited some more articles and then we had a staff meeting to plan out the next issue of the paper. For my first article I will be writing an article about the Souhegan graduation and interviewing my friends who are graduating to ask them how they are feeling about graduating and moving on the the next part of their educational journey. I'll also add my own insight as to how I felt when I was in thier shoes two years ago. For the issue following next weeks issue I am going to be doing an article about interviewing older people who live in the communities surrounding Milford about what they used to do on their summer vacations back in the day.

Hello and Welcome
Hello Everyone-
My name is Janine. I am a sophomore,soon to be junior at New England College in Henniker NH where I am majoring in communications. I recently landed a summer internship at the Milford Cabinet. This blog will be a doucmentation of the things that I do at my internship throughout the summer. It will as be a way for me to reflect of the expriences I partake in during the internship and the lessons I learn from working behind the scenes of a real live newspaper

1. Try out for both the CTE show and the musical and see where the chips fall with casting. If i do not get cast in either show then i will do stage crew for CTE. I determined that i needed a little bit more variety so I decided to crew for Mainstage which was fucking amazing! Yay for musicals :)
2. Try not to let stress overtake my soul and learn to balance my time wisely Did much better with time managment stuff for a majority of the semester. Bringing homework with you to do back stage during downtime in stage crew really does help.. especially when most of the running around you do is made up during the third act of the play
3. Not worry so much about what certain people think of me and that certain people from theatre think i am annoying. Yeah that was really overrated i honestly don't know why i worried about that so much i really shouldn't have.
4. Get a workstudy job so i can make some money. I hope to get a job at pathways but i am not totally sure how many opening they will have. Took a break from the whole work study thing this year gonna see if i can get a job at the art gallery next yr.
5. Work my ass off so i can hopefully.... and i do mean hopefully get on deans list. and that i've been doing it better sure as hell pay off. ..
6. Keep the friendships that I have strong and establish new ones as they come.
This is where this entry may get a little sentimental and start to repeat previous entries. This year has been full of lots of obstacles. Stress, dealing with a death in the family, friend troubles. This year there are quite a few people I have grown a lot closer to and they have been there for me through all the tough times and have helped me to keep my head on my shoulders and cheer me up. These people are.... Darren, Megan Westbrook, Emily Mills, Amy Storthz, Jennie, Rachel Kepnes, Sarah Truax, Ellery, ANH, Zach, Keri, Amanda and Erin Ludwig. In the same respect there are people who I just met this year who i've grown close to over the past couple months and who equally been there for me as the others have through these tough times Tim, Erin Ryan, Jackie McCann, Alli Graham Cooper Bowman and Chris Meli. I really feel that these people go unrecognized a lot of the time so i feel it's important to let them know how much they rock my socks off and how much I appreciate them being there for me. I am going to miss Keri so much when she graduates in December she is almost like a sister to me. Yeah my friends kick ass and that's all THERE IS TO IT!!!!

I am so happy this semester is almost over. It was a lot easier courseload wise than last semester but lately i've just had so much work it's been totally insane I can't wait to be home and relax and be able to read for pleasure. Spring Weekend was pretty damn awesome if I do say so myself. Lots of good times to be had. I rode a mechanical bull for the first time and that was pretty interesting. The Goonies is an awesome movie.
